Well an adolescent bear
So day one of Cape Breton ended with us heading into Pleasant Bay at the northwester corner of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park (CBHNP).
We were getting in much later then planned. I had wanted to get there in time for the sun set over the ocean behind were we were staying. Instead, just after entering the park we came across a car parked on the edge of the road and Emily with her (eagle peepers) mentioned something black in the woods across the small lake. Just as we passed the stopped car, Emily got a good look and noticed the bear up a tree.
We stopped a nearby look out spot and whipped around. Just as we stopped and got out the people in the car pointed him out to us.
So there he was, this young bear, probably about the size of a large but not huge dog. Probably 30 feet (at first) up a tree.
Bear up a tree, bear up a tree, bear up a tree.
So yes, bears climb trees, this isn't overly rare, but it is pretty cool.
He also just took a page out of Dorry's book and just kept climbing.
Just keep climbing, just keep climbing, just keep climbing
It was also just really cool to see him going up.
He started at the big branch down at the bottom of the photo
At this point we started to get worried. Those branches looked pretty darn small.
Because I didn't get any photos of the whole surrounding. This guy is now 30 ft up a tree, that is about 70 ft up a cliff.
He booked it down the tree shortly after this. I didn't get any photos of that, but might have gotten it on video. I haven't had a chance to review all the footage yet, if its any good, it will be posted later.
Then as we were driving away he started climbing another tree.
It was dark and we had places to be at that point though.
Got a cool motion blur of the passing car. So artsy
That is it for today.
Check in tomorrow evening for another post.
Ps sorry for the poor image quality, it was getting pretty dark.
